Chic Traveler:  Amy Swift Crosby

Occupation:  Founder, SMARTY.

Hometown:  Manchester By The Sea, MA

Dream destination?

Greek Islands. . . on a boat.

What’s always inside your carry on?

Inside my SJ is lip balm, natural hand sanitizer, my Bose headphones, Sweet Leaf drops for tea, Bigelow breath mints, Moleskine agenda.

What’s on your plane play list?

Washed Out, Citizen Cope, Depeche Mode

Your guilty pleasure while traveling?

Cocktails. . .

The Stephanie Johnson bag / bags that always make the trip?

I’m currently obsessing over the bright orange transparent ones [Miami Orange].  There’s a Warhol quality.

Any tips or must-pack items for making your hotel feel more like home?

My music always makes me feel better so I try to plug in my iPhone and get good tunes going immediately.

What’s the most stylish city/locale you’ve visited?  Anywhere in particular where the fashion/beauty/women’s personal style really blew you away?

Paris is always inspiring because of the understatement, and New York City is always good for the stylish utility people channel.  I also was in heaven in BA.

If you were introducing a world traveling friend to SJ for the first time, what’s the first piece you’d recommend they buy?

You gotta get the three piece flat pouches.  I love a matching set of bags that allow me to store things together in my bigger purse.  I feel so organized.

Next on your Stephanie Johnson wish list?

I’d like the Mary Alice Tote!

What’s your favorite SJ piece to give as a gift?

The Jumbo Zip Cosmetic is so useful to people – they love it.

Is there a favorite possession you’ve acquired during your travels?  What is it?

I love to pick up wraps and scarves from travels – they pack well and I always remember that place when I wear them.

Favorite travel ritual or souvenir: (Do you always visit a local book shop? Hunt down the best cappuccino? Pick up a tree ornament depicting your destination?)

I always look for interesting concepts – the way someone has done something.  So I try to go on side streets and find hidden stores, cafés, tea shops, jewelry spaces.  There’s always some inventive small business owner there.

Your personal travel style: (Do you like a luxury resort? A private hideaway? Do you prefer to lay on the beach? Explore the countryside?)

It depends on what I’ve been doing…I like the art of doing nothing as much as being in a city and absorbing the energy and action.  There is room for both – and both are rejuvenating in different ways.

The one thing that you cannot leave home without?

Mother Jeans.

Your happy place / Favorite travel destination?

It used to be Cape Ann, MA, but I moved there!  Now I’d say it’s Venice, CA.

How do you pack for a trip? (Are you a list maker? Do you pack in outfits? Throw caution to the wind and shop when you arrive?)

I pack in colors and themes.  Sometimes I know it’ll be a jean/bootie/t-shirt/blazer trip, and sometimes it’s all about dresses and maybe one pant.  It’s all about what I’m doing and who I’m seeing when I’m there.  For work, hosting events for SMARTY, I love a wicked high shoe and amazing piece from Rick Owens, Helmut Lang or Thakoon.

Favorite pre-travel or travel-friendly beauty routine?

I don’t wear any make up except this rich moisturizer called Indian Herbals and it keeps my face really hydrated – granted it looks like a shine-fest as well.

First drink in the air:  H2O, champagne or OJ?

Only water, all the way.

On your reading list?

I’m always trying to catch up on New Yorkers.

Favorite in-flight pastime?

Being alone – unreachable – is pretty nice.

Your flight’s delayed:  best way to kill time at the airport?

Read the paper.

How often do you fly?

About every 6-8 weeks.  I also take the train a lot.

Go-to flying ‘uniform?’

My black Nike Frees, Mother Jeans, Everlane t-shirt, scarf and cardigan.

Business or economy?

Depends on if I have mileage to upgrade.

Do you work in-flight or use the time to unwind?

Chicken, beef, or pasta?

NONE!  I don’t eat gluten and rarely meat.  It’s all about plants for me.
